One of my favorite techniques is called granulation. This is an adorning technique where very small granules are placed in an ornamenting style on the surface of the metal and fused to it without any solder. The special effect of this technique is that the small granules seem to magically stick to the piece as if they are not attached at all.

The Etruscan people were masters of this art but did not leave behind information on their techniques. For many centuries goldsmiths and artisans tried to copy this technique without success. About 150 years ago scientists discovered the reaction soldering technique and were able to trace its use back to antiquity.
